Users getting an error

closed

Our users are getting occisional messages that they couldn’t load the quiz up.  It has a message that says to contact us.  But I’m unable to find a reason why.  The latest person said it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t.  Didn’t change any settings from last time that I know of.  Just activated a new quiz.

You’ll need to enable debugging on your site to see what the actual cause of your crashes are, and/or contact your hosting provider for additional help as this would not be an issue with HD Quiz.

It sounds like your server/site is having intermittent issues loading. That message does not come from HD Quiz but instead sounds like a generic message from your host/server when your site goes down or has trouble loading.

HD Quiz is extremely lightweight and does not use AJAX or anything to load data – this means if a quiz loads fine once, it will always load fine. So if the page is providing an error message it is because of something outside of HD Quiz.

Someone just sent a screenshot:

Understood.  Enabled debug.  Will wait and see.

Thanks for the screenshot – that message is 100% not coming from HD Quiz.

That is a generic error message from your site. I wish I could help you more, but the only thing I can do is recommend you enable debugging so that you can hopefully see a useful error message.

Here is an article I wrote explaining the steps

Thank you so very much for the quick reply.  Awesome support!
If I’m asking for too much help for non-plugin related issues, please just tell me.
BUT,
I finally was able to recreate the error on my phone and can better describe what our users are seeing.  Like them, I had been able to do the quiz before.  Some of them report that they can do it, then can’t, then can again.
The screen moves so quickly, it was difficult to get a screen shot, but I managed to grab it after a few tries.  The “Start Quiz” screen/button are visible for an instant, followed by the “name, email, phone number” form, then the error screen.
I enabled debugging on the site and it didn’t record any errors.  I left it on overnight, and even cleared it and started with a fresh log and triggered the errors myself and it didn’t record anything.

The fact that you can see the quiz at all means that the error does not come from HD Quiz and is almost certainly not a server-based issue, and is instead being triggered by a JavaScript function on your site.

Can you provide a link to the quiz? I can take a look and see if I can find what is triggering it.

Right now, my best guess is that you have a script somewhere on your site that checks for any and all “form submissions” and then tries to do *something*. So when you try to start the quiz, this errant script tries and fails to do whatever it was trying to do, and shows you that error.

I feel sure it’s on the webpage side also, and appreciate your help in trying to help me find the issue.
It doesn’t always happen, but I don’t know enough to even tell the tech folks were to start looking on the hosting site.  Any phrasing or description I can give them that you suggest would be great!
Ron P.

Can you confirm that the error message on the screen cannot be generated by the HDQuiz?  I don’t know where that text is coming from, but I also don’t think the hosting service has that phone number located anywhere our account that they would even know it.

Just now, trying on desktop worked fine, phone gave error.  Cleared the history and phone worked fine.

I’ll start with the good news.

Thanks for providing me with the link, I now know 100% what the issue is!

The bad news – you’re going to feel bad haha.

You have the limit attempts addon installed. The message you were seeing is the custom message that you (or someone else on your team who set it up) set as the message that appears when a user has already taken the quiz. Just disable the addon since from what I can see, you don’t actually require it, and you should be good to go!

Ahhh.  Makes sense.  We ran the same contest last year.  Would those people have last year’s attempts counted also?  I removed that add-on and they say it works fine.
THANK YOU again for your help.  I have no idea why I even had that.  I never wanted to limit it.  But I had it set to 400, so at least I know alot of people thought it was popular.

Excellent; glad we were able to figure this out.

If you have the time, I’d appreciate it if you could leave a review for HD Quiz. (also just a reminder to disable debug mode now)
