I’m a new user and just looking at this as an option for me. Is possible to have notifications sent to me when someone takes the quiz? Also, I would like to have an option for the student to ask for more explanation on an incorrect answer.

Hi Randall,
take a look at the addons page for HD Quiz. There is both a light (free) and pro (paid) version of a Save Results addon. The free version will record the scores for logged-in users, the pro allows you to have a form before the quiz (so you can capture information about the quiz taker such as their name if not logged in) and also has options to email you the results after each quiz completion.

As for your second question – this is built into HD Quiz. Each question can have “extra text” that appears by default when the user gets the question wrong. You can also make it so that this extra text also appears even if the user gets the question correct in the quiz options.

If you are enjoying HD Quiz please leave a review here on the official WordPress.org page. HD Quiz is developed by me, just some dude, and is supported and available for free. It may seem dumb, but truly nothing makes me happier than knowing that people are using and loving HD Quiz and my hard work.
