After upgrading the plugin and using the update data tool the plugin breaks the page completely. Nothing loads. I get this error:

Service Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

Additionally, a 503 Service Unavailable error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Is this connected to the update or is this a separate issue? Is it something I can fix or is it something you need to fix?

Hi Adam,
that error comes directly from your server – not HD Quiz or even WordPress.

From what version did you upgrade from? The only time you need to use that upgrade tool is if you are upgrading from a super old version – from like two years ago.

Literally thousands of users have upgraded from these older versions and used the upgrade tool without issue. If your 503 error stems from this upgrade – it’d be a first!

Where exactly are you seeing this error? In your WordPress dashboard? Just on HD Quiz admin pages? Only on pages displaying quizzes? Across your entire site?

Ok. So the update is not the source. However the plugin is involved somehow. The error displays on the page (instead of the page) when I enter the shortcode. Without the shortcode the page displays as it should.

The only thing I can think of that could help track this down is to enable WP_DEBUG. This can be set to true by editing your wp-config.php file located in your WordPress installation folder. With a bit of luck, instead of showing a generic server message, we can get an actual error message that will point us in the correct direction.

Other than that, try creating a NEW quiz and adding it to a page to see if that crashes as well. It will let us know if the issue is the data in your old quizzes or not

Hi again!

Thank you for helping out, I really appreciate it. Now I have set Debug to true, to me it is still displaying the same error though, here is the page: https://www.xn--kpanyproduktion-8sb.se/konsumentskydd/

I have tried making a new quiz but that hasn’t helped either.

I got in contact with the hosting provider and they said that everything looked OK on the server but perhaps the RAM usage exceeded the account limitations. Now there is a limit on 1 gb, I can pay for an upgrade to 2 gb RAM (or 8 gb but that is a new level of hosting). Do you think this could be the problem?

I wouldn’t upgrade. HD Quiz has a SUPER low footprint. So if the issue is server resource-based, it would likely point to something else on your eating up all the resources. Unless you are trying to load thousands of questions on a single page or something.

Right now, here are the only suggestions I can make.

First, temporarily switch themes to see if the issues persist. Next, disable all plugins except HD Quiz to see if the issue persists. This will help us know if the issue is actually caused by your theme or another plugin.

If the above does not help, then I can only think of two ideas. The first is to check your PHP version on your site. It’s possible that your PHP installation is missing default “modules” that are required. Usually, changing the version to whatever the latest offered is will force it to reregister and will fix the missing modules.

The second idea is stupidly unlikely, but it’s possible you simply have a corrupt installation of HD Quiz. Try deactivating and deleting HD Quiz and installing fresh from the repository.

If you are enjoying HD Quiz please leave a review here on the official WordPress.org page. HD Quiz is developed by me, just some dude, and is supported and available for free. It may seem dumb, but truly nothing makes me happier than knowing that people are using and loving HD Quiz and my hard work.
